Class Description:

This course is designed as an introduction to the analysis of classic German literary works alongside a variety of other textual genres. We will explore the theme of "Anderssein" in a range of selected literary works from the 18th century to the present. You (the student) will engage with German-language literature and experiment with producing your own short stories in written and spoken forms, or even poems and songs. We will read works by Franz Kafka, Bertolt Brecht, Ingeborg Bachmann, Rainer Maria Rilke, Emine Sevgi Oezdamar, and others.

We will also critically engage with contemporary German rap and rock. You will have the opportunity to creatively respond through writing, oral performances, and film voiceovers. Class will be taught entirely in German.
