Class Description:
Misfits and Mishaps

In various ways and for various reasons we all feel at times out of place, like we do not belong, as if in an environment made for someone else. And our lives are never free of accidents, errors, misjudgments, unfairness, obstacles. In this Introduction to French Studies we learn critical analysis of cultural texts and medias through literature, songs, comic novels and films in which mishaps happen to or produce misfits. Fiction by Rabelais, Maupassant, Djebar; poems by Rimbaud, Desbordes-Valmore, Cahun, Rabearivelo; a play by Racine, a comic novel by Tardi whose protagonist is a young woman sleuth around WWI (Adèle Blanc-Sec), and films by Dulac, Truffaut and Varda.
