Mandatory bootcamp on Saturday, June 12, 2020, 8-5pm Remote: All instruction will be fully online with set meeting patterns. Students must be online at the scheduled days and times. In addition, instructors may provide supplemental content that students can engage with any time or within a certain time frame. The instructors might be available for limited in-person interactions. However, in-person interactions will be optional if available. Students will have a very similar experience whether on campus or off campus.
Class Description:
Interdisciplinary student teams create rapid production market analysis of promising medical technologies/services to determine potential for success in market. Exposure to University innovations, venture firms, inventors. The Medical Industry Valuation Laboratory is a 2-credit, graduate level elective that uses an interdisciplinary and intercollegiate approach to provide a rapid production market analysis of promising medical technologies and services that have the potential to benefit and expand Minnesota economic development.
This Laboratory provides students the opportunity to work on an interdisciplinary team with students from Carlson School of Management, College of Liberal Arts, Information Technology, Academic Health Center and Law to develop "first look" 10-page market analysis white paper for clients with a promising new technology in a rapid production model (3-4 week turn around). Working with students from various disciplines, the teams will analyze market size, evaluate technical, business, preliminary intellectual property, and regulatory challenges, as well as develop a 'go or no go' recommendation for continuing product development or market feasibility.
Who Should Take This Class?:
This course is reserved for Full-Time MBA students pursuing a MILI enterprise.
Learning Objectives:
By the completion of this course, students will have acquired the skills to evaluate emerging medical industry innovations. Specifically, the course will provide students with the skill to:
 Succinctly summarize the nature of new medical industry technology or process design.
 Utilize the different skill sets of early career professionals in diverse fields to evaluate the technical, business and legal challenges of a prospective product or process.
 Understand how intellectual property rights for a new medical technology or process are researched for future projection.
 Use databases to size a potential market with the goal of developing a go or no go recommendation for future product development.
 Complete a written and verbal effective return on investment analysis of a prospective new medical technology or process.
