Course Catalog Description:
How have digital media innovations like social media, mobile phones, artificial intelligence, drones and games shaped and been shaped by a culture and society globally? Learn to critically examine the function of digital media in your life. Take away a socio-historical understanding of digital media innovation, and the social, political, and economical impact of new media in creativity, industry, and culture from a cross-disciplinary perspective. Topics range from the concept of branding in an online context, to the varied uses of digital media in the context of journalism, social mobilization, law and privacy, business, globalization, content creation, and beyond. You will read, discuss, and debate cutting edge material from documentaries, podcasts, popular press, and academic literature. This course balances local contexts with global perspectives, and provides details into the practicalities of working and living in a new media environment.
Class Description:

New Media and Culture is an upper-level survey and critical exploration of how digital media communication technologies have shaped and been shaped by culture and society. Our readings and discussion focus primarily on social media, but we also discuss other forms of mobile and Internet communication and media. Within various fields of liberal arts -
from those based in social science to hard science, from humanities to arts and literature - we examine the issue of how new media functions within the world and gives shape to various disciplines within the liberal arts. Furthermore, added insight on this vital topic will lend a critical understanding of new media as it relates to your own liberal education. Although social media has become a standard part of learning within your own major fields of study, this course will encourage you to critically examine the broad function of digital media in your lives. The course will examine a number of relevant themes within the study of digital media and culture -- the cultural and sociological effects of social media, the concept of branding in an online context, the representation of the Internet within culture, and the many varied uses of digital media in the context of journalism, business, globalization, content creation and beyond.
