- Class Description:
- One of the most important aspects of training to become an archaeologist is field experience. While coursework is invaluable, methods of excavation, survey, and proveniencing can only be adequately learned in a field setting. Our 4-week archaeology field schools are designed to provide students with a comprehensive overview of, and experience in, all of the basic aspects of archaeological survey and excavation. Students will learn how to design and conduct a survey (Phase I), including setting up transects, excavating STPs (shovel test pits), and mapping the results of the survey. Students will also experience all phases of a full archaeological excavation (Phase III & IV), including setting up excavation units; techniques of excavation such as shovel-shaving and troweling; excavation of features; screening of sediment; identification of sediment texture and color; mapping of excavation units, features, and finds. In the process, students will also learn how to identify artifacts such as ceramics and lithics, ecofacts such as charcoal and animal bone, and to distinguish historic versus prehistoric artifacts.
