Class Notes:
Students who enroll in ARTH 8440 will need to attend ARTH 5411 (Gender and Sexuality in Art) on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:45-11:00 AM, in addition to the seminar discussion section, which meets on Fridays from 1:00-3:00 PM.
Class Description:
"Gender and Sexuality in Art Since 1863" (Fall 2018) - This seminar in contemporary art is paired with ARTH5411, which enrolls both graduate and upper level undergraduate students. The seminar component is only open to graduate students. They will attend the regular course meetings for ARTH5411, and also meet in a seminar format once a week. In the seminar, they will pursue independent research projects on questions related to the course topic, take turns leading class discussion, and share their writing through peer review and class presentations. ARTH 8440 is a graduate seminar that examines specific aspects of contemporary art history. The topic changes each time it is taught. Previous topics have included: "Nationalism and Sexuality," "Discourses of Death in Postmodernism," "Of Veils and Vision," "Art and Genomics," "Theories of Witness," "Imagining History, Creating Pasts," "Sound and the Visual," and "Participation."
