- Linguistic types/processes that appear across languages. Grammatical relations, word order, transitivity, subordination, information structure, grammaticalization. How these are present in syntax of Spanish. prereq: Grad student or instr consent
- Class Description:
- The structure of modern Spanish: Syntax. The course discusses linguistic notions present in the syntax of Spanish, such as: discrete and prototypic categorization, grammaticalization, grammatical relations, flow of information, transitivity. The discussion is centered in the possible explanatory role of these notions vis-a-vis syntactic phenomena in Spanish, such as: word order, hypotaxis, parataxis, clitics, discourse particles. The content is theoretical and students are expected to come to class with an adequate knowledge of Spanish grammar. The target audience are graduate students. Required readings: Taylor. _Linguistic Categorization_; and excerpts from various authors.
