This course introduces students interested in infectious diseases to the use of simulation models for understanding concepts in infectious disease epidemiology. This short course will focus on human papillomaviruses (HPV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Emphasis will be placed on developing a conceptual understanding of the types of epidemiologic data that are relevant for constructing basic mathematical model. The HPV models will illustrate the links between infection and cancer, and the role of screening and vaccination. The CMV models will illustrate the epidemiologic concepts relevant to studying infectious diseases that can be transmitted from mother to infant. These methods will be illustrated by lectures, reading assignments, a course project and hands-on experience of setting up models in spreadsheets and modeling packages.

Class Description:
This course will focus on the considerable burden due to infectious and noninfectious diseases within middle and low-income countries, as well as the underlying risk factors that lead to their emergence and spread. The course will utilize a case-study approach, and facilitated class discussion. The course will select different representative major diseases/health problems of international importance. In addition to learning more about the specific diseases, students will review various measures of disease burden and health status, as well as epidemiologic research and methods used describe and analyze disease determinants. The course will also expose students to different interventions (prevention and control strategies) that have been used, both for emergency situations and for more endemic diseases that significantly impact the health of populations. This class is intended for Masters or Doctoral students in the School of Public Health; additional graduate students may be admitted by permission of the instructor. Prerequisites include PUBH 6320 Fundamentals of Epidemiology or PUBH 6341 Epidemiologic Methods I
