- Class Description:
- This course fulfills the behavioral science core requirement for MPH students. The course provides both depth and breadth in addressing social and behavioral science. Materials address theories and applications in public health, from four major perspectives: psychosocial, community, economic, and policy. The psychosocial unit includes exposure to multiple behavioral theories, application of theory in understanding etiology as well as intervention development. The community unit includes a review of community change concepts and theories, and exposure to community organizing techniques. The economic unit addresses supply and demand, opportunity costs, taxes and subsidies, evaluation of goods and services, and costs versus benefits, as well as the role of economics in public health decision-making. The policy unit addresses government structure, institutional behavior and theories, and the administrative, judicial, and legislative processes. Lectures and readings provide an overview of theories and implementation, and assignments provide the opportunity to apply concepts to practical issues, including a chance to write about a self-selected topic of public health interest. The textbook and all readings will be available online through a University Libraries link at the course website.
