- Class Notes:
- This course is designed to introduce students to contemporary debates on the role of law and courts in "emerging democracies," broadly defined. This category encompasses countries outside advanced, industrialized democracies, where, at least to date, independent courts and the rule of law have been thought to be well-established. In other words, it largely (but not entirely) brackets what is a voluminous and important literature on law and courts in the United States and Canada, Western Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. That said, the course has no specific geographic focus but draws on works on a variety of countries that speak to common thematic and theoretical concerns.
