- Course Catalog Description:
- National and contemporary period 1825 to present, with emphasis on social, cultural, political, and economic change.
- Class Description:
- This course examines the diverse histories of Latin American nations from the end of formal Spanish and Portuguese colonialism during the 1820s to the present. The course balances attention to broad political, social, economic and cultural transformations, such as the struggle to consolidate stable nation-states after Independence, efforts to ?modernize? in the late nineteenth century, and the extremes of rule that the region experienced during the twentieth century, with insight into the daily lives of ordinary people. Throughout the course we will focus on the persistence of hierarchies based in class, race, ethnicity and gender that have spanned from the colonial period to the present. The short and condensed format of a summer course offers the unique opportunity to design a more participatory course that focuses on developing the skills we employ as historians, rather than simply ?covering? expansive historical periods. As a writing intensive class, the course's assignments have been devised to encourage you to write often and efficiently and to familiarize you with some of the primary research skills of historians.
