- This course traces the development of large-scale public entertainments in the ancient Mediterranean world, from the athletic contests of Olympia and dramatic festivals of Athens to the chariot races and gladiatorial games of the Roman Empire. Through lecture, discussions, and readings, we will explore the wider significance of these spectacles in their impact on the political, social, and economic life of the societies that supported them. Enrollment is open to all intereseted undergraduates.
