- Class Description:
- Because of rapid human population growth and even more rapid advances in technology, humans now affect nearly every aspect of our global environment. In this changing world, informed citizens need to understand the interconnectedness of issues such as global warming, habitat destruction, pollution, disease, and biodiversity. In this context, this course introduces basic concepts in ecology for non-majors, with an emphasis on understanding the science relevant to issues facing society. Through projects, readings, discussions, and lectures, we will explore the role of humans in - and reliance on - natural environments. The three main themes of the course are: 1) natural history of local, regional, and global environments, 2) biological diversity in a changing world, and 3) ecosystems that sustain us.
