This course will explore the complex nuances of intercultural communication. We will consider the important role of context (social/cultural, historical, and interpersonal) in intercultural interactions. This includes communication between varying races, ethnicities, sexualities, classes, counter-cultures & subcultures, and a variety of intersections of modalities of power. We will discuss the relationship between language, culture, and communication, and cover issues of cultural identity, the process of cultural adaptation, and intercultural conflicts. The readings, class discussions, and assignments are designed to help develop intercultural communication skills, sensitivity, self-reflexivity, and competency. The course encourages involvement, enjoyment, and appreciation of diverse cultures.
