Reading excerpts from canonical Chinese texts. Transnational nature of Classical Chinese/its importance in study of East Asian cultures. Taught in English. prereq: 5211 and two years of an East Asian language (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) or its equivalent or instr consent
Class Description:

This course builds the foundation in classical Chinese established in the Fall semester course (5211) with the goal of increasing understanding of important vocabulary and rhetorical structures characteristic of philosophical prose. Prerequisite: 5211 or permission of instructor. Knowledge of characters important; knowledge of Chinese pronunciation not essential.

Grading:

Class attendance and participation: 25%; Take-home translation assignments: 25%; Midterm translation exercise: 15%; Take-home final: 35%

Periodic vocabulary quizzes and translation assignments; continuing progress through same textbook used in 5211.
