- Class Description:
- Contemporary art practice is as rich and diverse as the theories behind it. This course investigates both the practice and theory that informs the work of contemporary artists. Through a combination of readings, lectures, discussions, writing assignments and projects we explore the significant questions that lie at the intersection of Ethics and Aesthetics, what role does our perception of Beauty play in preservation of the environment? What is a Just Image? What role does the Anti-Aesthetic play in contemporary art's ability to challenge culturally prescribed definitions of Beauty? What role does the museum play in shaping Aesthetic Judgment? In answering these questions we will not only look to the artwork of others, but also examine how these questions shape our own practices as artists and writers. Readings will include writings by artists, supplemented by articles from art journals, as well as essays by art historians and critics of visual culture. The course will include museum visits and guest lecturers by local artists in order to immerse students in the community of artists and art spaces in the Twin Cities. ArtS3401W: Critical Theories and Their Construction from a Studio Perspective utilizes writing and critical thinking to deepen each student's connection to art and to reflect on their own aesthetic experiences.
