Survey of representative cultural-historical events in Europe (German-speaking countries, Scandinavian, the Netherlands) from early Germanic times to 1700.

Class Description:
This course, with lectures in English, offers an overview of the cultural, political, and social development of the German-speaking countries, the Low Countries, and the Nordic Countries from the earliest days of contact between the Germanic tribes and the Romans until 1700. Emphasis will be placed on the way in which present-day Northern Europe views its medieval and early modern past and the role of the Middle Ages, the Reformation, and the Thirty Years War in the creation of national identities. Topics to be discussed include origin myths, the Germanic reshaping of the ancient Roman world, the development of medieval Christianity, the social position of women in medieval and early modern times, medieval and early modern court culture, Reformation and Counter-Reformation debates. Discussions will involve many types of cultural artifacts, e.g., literary, historical, religious, and philosophical texts; manuscripts illuminations, architecture; court music. Authors to be discussed include Tacitus, Einhard, Hartmann von Aue, Hadewijch van Antwerp, Luther, Grimmelshausen, et al. Discussions are in English; additional work in each student's primary language for GSD majors and minors.

The first exam is a "medieval"-style oral exam. The second exam is written with short identifications and a longer essay.
