Class Description:

18th Century was a period of Enlightenment, slavery, and rebellion across the globe. So much of Enlightenment and eugenics originated in what we consider as present day Germany during this period. Once unified, Germany gains colonies in Africa and the South Pacific. However, in the 18th Century German speaking lands profited and participated in colonialism too. Austria made many attempts to gain colonies in the 18th Century. While these were unsuccessful, Austria participated in the slavery of Africans within its borders through courtly subjects like Angelo Soliman. Because slavery and colonialism was a global endeavor, we will also read first hand accounts of those who were enslaved so as to better understand the many perspectives of the atrocity. Colonialism will be a large part of the class, but not all of it; we will also discuss the subjugation of women through the emerging genre of German theater. Join me to discuss the ways women, Black courtly subjects, and enslaved individuals rebelled. We will end the course discussing the current legacy of the 18th C today. Maybe we will get down to the question, was Beethoven really Black?
