- Class Description:
In German 3104, we will read literature that thematize race, class, and gender in contemporary German society. These shorter, narrative texts point to moments of unbelonging and difference from majority German society. Through these stories of authors/artists noticing difference in themselves and the world around them, I aim for us to discuss how to negotiate these differences in our lives. We will read and watch pieces by Sharon Otoo, Olivia Wenzel, Vina Yun, Reyhan Sahin, and Margarete Stokowski. Each of these texts is marked equally by compelling content and complexity. In class discussions and assignments, we will closely examine the themes and artistic effect in these texts. You will be encouraged to share, test, and develop your ideas to the best of your ability in German. As a Writing Intensive course GER 3104W also provides support to you as you formulate and present interpretive arguments using textual evidence. Required readings, short lectures, student presentations, and discussions are in German.
