Class Description:
Organizations run the world, yet they do not always function in ideal and understandable ways. This course is designed to help students understand the complexities of communication in the workplace, government, and other organizations, and perhaps even improve it. "Communication" here refers to both communication between members of an organization, and between the organization and the outside world.
NOTE: The section Jeremy Rose teaches is reserved for graduate students in the Strategic Communication M.A. program - no undergraduates admitted.
Grading:
Midterm exam (22% of the course grade); final exam (22% of the grade); 11 responses to readings (24%); application paper (9%); annotated bibliography (22%). In many cases, the annotated bibliography for this course becomes a major component of the literature review for the student's M.A. capstone project.
Exam Format:
Test: 10 definitions, plus two essay questions (supplied in advance)
Class Format:
Lecture / discussion. Students post reflections on the readings the night before class; a large percentage of the class period is spent discussing the students' postings.
