Spanish dialects. Spanish in contact with other languages. Bilingualism, language attitudes. Pragmatic analysis of Spanish. Impact of recent cultural, political, and socioeconomic transformations on language. prereq: A C- or better in Span 3107W or TLDO 3107W

Class Description:
SPAN 3704: Sociolinguistics of the Spanish-Speaking World El objetivo principal del curso es introducir al estudiante a los conceptos fundamentales en el campo de la sociolinguistica a traves del estudio de la lengua hispana en sus diversos contextos geograficos y sociales. Despues de una revision general de algunos conceptos basicos de la sociolinguistica y la sociologia del lenguaje, se analizaran en detalle los dialectos del espa?ol de America, incluyendo las influencias que han recibido de otras lenguas en contacto. Despues, se discutira la metodologia sociolinguistica y se examinaran estudios que demuestran la influencia de varios factores sociales en las comunidades hispanas, tales como sexo, edad y clase social. En la ultima parte del curso se examinaran los pronombres de tratamiento, las actitudes linguisticas y el bilinguismo social en el mundo hispanico.
