Class Description:
Although less known to the general public than tales from Ancient Greece and Rome, the tales that have come down to us from Medieval Scandinavia are as interesting and important as those. We will read two main sourcebooks of Scandinavian mythology, known as the Elder Edda (the first half) and the Younger Edda (most of it); a textbook will supplement the main texts. The course will introduce the students to the body of the only ancient myths extant in the Germanic-speaking world and to the foundations of mythological thinking. The original language of the Scandinavian myths is Old Icelandic, but all the reading will be in English. Lectures (the main medium of this course) will alternate with discussion. There will be a take-home midterm and a take-home final based on the material of the lectures and the textbook (essay questions in both); also a paper, about five pages long, will be required. The course spans the areas of mythology, religion, literature, and cultural anthropology. No prerequisites.
