Class Description:
This course is an introduction to syntax: the study of how words are organized into phrases and sentences. The objective is to introduce students to basic concepts and issues in current syntactic theory within the Principles and Parameters approach. We will focus on our knowledge of the structure of phrases and sentences, how such knowledge is represented, and what it reveals about the nature of human language. The course will be conducted through lectures and discussions. Course requirements include regular problem sets, a paper proposal, a final course paper and an in-class presentation of the paper. Target audience is graduate students in linguistics and related disciplines as well as undergraduate Honors students.
