The cultural focus of this course is the Austro-Hungarian empire between 1890 and 1914, a short time span with huge socio-historical changes. Course topics include the role of the Habsburg monarchy, the richness of music, art and architecture, politics and antisemitism, the honor code and dueling, Freudian psychoanalysis, "male melancholy" and "female hysteria", sexual morals and practices, and more.
