Course Catalog Description:: This course will introduce students to colonial and postcolonial representations of gender and sexuality in Francophone contexts. Through literary and cinematic works from the Caribbean, Maghreb, West Africa, and Quebec, we will examine constructions and deconstructions of gender roles and sexual norms in relation to other identity categories such as race, class, nation and religion. We will consider topics such as exotic portrayals of the other, repressive and rebellious eroticism, and ambivalent or unruly affirmations of identity. Taught in French.
