Class Description:
In this seminar, we will study several theoretical models in the study of religion and apply them to analyzing ancient evidence from the ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean periods (covering the time period from about 1000 B.C.E. to 100 C.E.). Some of the themes covered will be: religious violence, purity/impurity issues, ritual activity, and constructions of power (such as rhetorical ideologies, societal structures, and imperialism). We will also analyze the study of this ancient evidence in academia, paying close attention to the strategies utilized in "traditional" scholarship and modern critiques of this history of scholarship. We will analyze evidence in translation, but students with linguistic competence in the relevant languages will be urged to apply them in their final course projects. Although designed for graduate students in the Religions in Antiquity program, graduate students in comparable programs are welcome to enroll. Please contact the instructor for further information.
Who Should Take This Class?:
Graduate students enrolled in the Religions in Antiquity program as well as graduate students in comparable disciplines who wish to be up to date in how modern scholars are analyzing ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean evidence and how they are re-assessing the history of scholarship in the related disciplines.
