Class Description:
This course is designed for Chinese language learners and students who are interested in teaching Chinese as a second language. The course will also be helpful to those who are serving as teaching assistants in Chinese language courses. This course introduces basic concepts of Chinese linguistics using empirical methodologies. Students will be able to identify the linguistic features of Mandarin Chinese that are universal across languages and those that are specific to Chinese. This course covers areas such as phonology, syntax and semantics of Chinese. Students will be able to explore how Mandarin Chinese consonants and vowels are articulated, how Chinese sentences are structured, and the cognitive constructions supporting the meaning of words. Examination of pragmatic aspects of Chinese will also be introduced. As an example of course work, some common errors from Chinese language learners will be used as case study materials. After finishing the course, students will be able to explain why the errors are made, how to avoid them in the process of language learning, and how to facilitate the practice of language teaching.
