Class Description:
This course explores Russian art, architecture, music, literature, film, and popular culture in four tumultuous eras: Peter the Great's forcing old Russia to confront Western European culture, the nineteenth-century Great Reforms that saw one of the largest systems of slavery in world history abolished, the three revolutions of the early twentieth century, and the upheaval of perestroika. Through all these periods, individual artists tried to escape, redefine, or find the true essence of an unstable concept of what is Russian. By engaging with Orthodox Christian icons and Soviet propaganda posters, realist and avant-garde paintings, Shostakovich operas and post-Soviet romance novels, students will address the issues of what culture is and how it works.
Who Should Take This Class?:
No knowledge of Russian is required, and the course is well suited for anyone interested in one or more aspects of Russian culture. The course counts toward the Arts/Humanities core requirement and the Global Perspectives theme in the current Liberal Education requirements, as well as toward the Russian major and minor.
