Course Catalog Description:
War-related issues in Japan. Animation films, comics from 1940s to 1990s. Mobilization of culture for WWII. Conflict between constitutional pacifism and national security. Japan's role in cold war and post-cold war worlds.
Class Description:
This history course examines one of the fundamental issues for postwar Japan, Asia, and the US -- the meaning of peace -- through popular culture media. Popular culture in Japan was a crucial site where the topic of war and peace was explored when politicians avoided the topic of war. Now the Japanese pacifist Constitution is under pressure for revision. Major themes of this course are: 1) the current pacifist Constitution vs. the demand for military security; 2) nuclear power policy vs. the peace movement; and 3) Japanese pacifism vs. international peace corporation. Cold war politics and post-cold war geopolitics greatly affected the meaning of peace in Asia and Japan's identity as a pacifist nation, and this course traces such changes from 1945 to the present. Materials for this course include films, manga, novels, and scholarly writings. Tuesday hours are for film viewing and other activities; Thursday hours are for lecture and discussion.
