Course Catalog Description:: Second of a two-semester course. European thought in its historical/cultural context. Emphasizes development of philosophical/scientific thought, its relation to thinking about the individual and the community. Readings are from original sources.
Class Description:: The second of a two-semester survey of of the history of European philosophy in its historical/cultural context after 1750. Part I, which covered the period from Antiquity to 1750, was offered in Fall 2014, but students can join this class even if they were not enrolled in Part I and have no previous experience with this course material The course emphasizes the development of philosophical/scientific thought and its relation to thinking about the individual and the community. The course is lecture driven but includes significant amounts of seminar style class discussion. Readings are drawn from original texts by such authors as Hume, Kant, Diderot, Rousseau, Hegel, Marx, Darwin, Nietzsche, Weber, Freud, Woolf, Heidegger, Adorno, Derrida, and Foucault. Students will write several (4-6) short discussion response papers and take an in-class mid-term and final exam. A final synoptic essay is also required.
