- This course examines 1) how different countries remember WWII and how memories of the war have been shaped by domestic and international contexts of each country and 2) how WWII changed the world in areas of human rights, the government-society relations, and ethical use of science and technology. Various faculty members with different geographical and thematic expertise come to the class as guest lecturers throughout the semester.
- Class Description:
- Going beyond conventional scopes of WWII studies and familiar narratives of the war, this course explores environmental impacts of the war, science/technology/medicine developed for the war, and colonial armies and empire-wide dimensions. You will learn many untold, global stories of WWII and think about larger ramifications than nation-to-nation conflicts.
- Who Should Take This Class?:
- Anyone interested in war, ecology, colonialism, nationalism, and ethical issues. No prerequisites. Hist 3362 (as opposed to Hist 1362) is recommended for lower-division students.
- Learning Objectives:
- 1) Thinking beyond the national narrative and human-centered narrative. 2) Understanding historical contexts critically. 3) Articulating ideas in writing.
- Grading:
- A few quizzes, a mini-research project, two papers.
- Exam Format:
- No exams. A few quizzes, a mini-research project, two papers.
