- Course Catalog Description:
- This course focuses on the way various cultural groups in Israel attempt to achieve cultural recognition. Students will learn how various ethnic and religious groups shape their identities through process of acculturation and struggle. Students will learn about several Israeli cultures by reading literature, book chapters and case-studies, and watching movies, all of which center on these debates. Students will examine various case studies centered on these multicultural issues in Israel and will discuss and reflect on the implications of the issues raised by the course material for the international community, the United States, and for their own lives.
- Class Description:
This course focuses on the way various cultural groups in Israel attempt to achieve cultural recognition. In this course students will learn about several Israeli cultures by reading literature, book chapters and case-studies, and by watching movies all of which center around these debates. For example, students will read the literature of Palestinian citizens of Israel and discuss their hybrid identities.
Another example would be Mizrahi literature or the literature of Arab-Jews that was engendered by the twin traumas of migration and absorption, and the need to confront negative images and inferior status in terms of culture and Arab identity. Students will discuss the issues that shape the collective identity of Israelis such as the Holocaust, religion and nationality.
Students will examine various case studies centered around these multicultural issues in Israel and will discuss and reflect on the implications of the issues raised by the course material for the international community, the United States, and for their own lives.

- Exam Format:
Midterm (25%)
Midterm exam will be a combination of essay and short answer questions. It will cover content from course readings, lectures, films and in-class discussions and activities. The midterm will cover
material from weeks 1-7.
2. Final (25%)
A take-home essay exam of approximately eight double-spaced pages submitted on-line at the course Canvas site . The final will cover material from weeks 8-15.
