Modern standard Chinese skills developed further through conversation/reading. prereq: 3021
Class Description:

This is the second half of a two-semester sequence in second year modern standard Chinese (Mandarin). It is designed for students who have completed Chn 3021 at the U of M, or the equivalent. It will help students improve their ability to understand, speak, read, and write Chinese, and particularly aims at helping students enlarge their vocabulary and learn more complex sentence structures. Students will also be trained to write good compositions to express their views. Those who have not completed Chn 3021 at the U of M, but wish to enroll in this course, need the instructor's approval. Textbook, etc. Integrated Chinese Level II part2 (textbook, workbook, and Audio Cd's, 3nd ed.) by Yuehua Liu et al. Boston: Cheng & Tsui Company, 2009.




After learning each lesson, students are expected to acquire the communication ability: interpretive communication; interpersonal communication and presentational communication.


For example:



•Interpretive Communication


After learning lesson11(Chinese holidays), the teacher will provide an authentic text related to the lesson that students have just learned, and the students can answer information as well as interpretive questions to assess comprehension.



•Interpersonal Communication


After receiving feedback from the teacher regarding the interpretive phase, students are engaged in interpersonal oral communication about a particular topic which relates to the interpretive text (Chinese holidays).



•Presentational Communication


After the first and second communication phases, Students engage in presentational communication by sharing their research/ideas/opinions about Chinese holidays or related topics. Sample presentational formats:
speeches, drama, skits, radio broadcasts, posters, brochures, essays, websites, etc.

Students who have not completed Chinese 3021 but wish to register need the instructor's consent. The course will help students improve their ability to understand, speak, read, and write Chinese, and particularly aims to help students develop more sophisticated vocabulary and more complex sentence structures so that they can meet the standard of Chinese GPT. It will cover lessons 11-20 of the textbook "Integrated Chinese" Level 2 by Yuehua Liu, Tao-chung Yao et al (Chen & Tsui Company). By the end of the semester, students should be able to understand spoken Chinese, conduct fairly sustained conversation in Chinese, read Chinese articles of some sophistication, and write compositions in Chinese for general communication purposes.
