Course Catalog Description:
Selected topics in Korean culture. Topics specified in the Class Schedule.
Class Description:
This course is designed to provide students with the introductory understanding on the Korean culture/society with an emphasis on South Korea's current domestic issues and everyday life. Today's Korean society, economy, culture, and the values of its people are vastly different from those of two decades ago. This course covers key cultural topics associated with Korean values in the new global context. The course contents should be informative and descriptive, without engaging in theoretical arguments, making this class useful not only for Korean studies major but also for the educated general public who would like to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the essentials of modern Korea. The course content will be based on scholarly articles and book chapters. Class lecture and discussion will be supplemented with films, video clips, and other audio visual materials. All course content will be accessible to students regardless of Korean language proficiency. This course provides an overview of Korean culture with an emphasis on six modules: Family, Education, Economy, Democracy, Thought and Religion, and Inter-Korea issues. This course has no pre-requisites and does not expect students to have a background in cultural studies, history, or sociology, nor a background on Korea. It does however expect that students have some interest in these areas. Class procedures consist of instructor-led lectures which engage students through in-class small group discussions. Throughout the course students conduct research and analysis of case studies on Korean society, interpret socio-economic data, and undertake individual project. Students' participation in class discussion and exercises is essential.
