- Class Description:
- This course will spend considerable time on Jewish literature produced during the Persian, Hellenistic, and early Roman periods (c. 540 BCE - 100 CE). We will primarily read texts in translation, but students competent in Greek or Hebrew will be expected to work with the texts of their respective skills. Examples of texts we will analyze are: Ezra and Nehemiah; Qohelet (Ecclesiastes); The Letter of Aristeas; excerpts from the works of Philo; The Wisdom of Solomon; Esther (the Hebrew and Greek versions); Judith; Daniel (plus Greek editions to Daniel); 3 Maccabees; 1 Enoch; Jubilees; 1 and 2 Maccabees; Psalms of Solomon; excerpts from the Dead Sea Scrolls; excerpts from Josephus; and 4 Ezra. We will also incorporate secondary research that helps to contextualize these texts, and we will address the use of particular genres (novel, historiography, wisdom, and apocalypse).
