This course will examine practices of idealization in the sciences. How should we understand the deliberate misrepresentation of detail in models - fiction in the service of simplification? Reading recent work from Kwame Appiah, Catherine Elgin, and Angela Potochnik (among others), we will analyze how idealization operates and what it implies in different scientific contexts. Graduate students from all disciplines are welcome and encouraged to enroll.
