Class Description:
In this course we approach the study of environmental systems through the lens of global climate change, which has the potential for far-reaching consequences that extend well beyond the climate itself. We begin with the science of climate and the resulting spatial patterns of climate on which much of human infrastructure (e.g., levees, building codes) and activity (e.g., agriculture, recreation) is based. We then consider soils, landforms and ecosystems, including the processes at work that affect their structure and functioning (nutrient cycles, weathering processes, flood, fire, etc.) and that influence how humans have decided to live on, and use, the land. We then bring these environmental "systems" (climate, soil/landforms, ecosystems) together by considering the potential impacts of future climate change and possibilities for adaptation and mitigation. The activities and decisions of society that affect environmental systems are infused throughout the course, including the values implicit in our activities and decisions.
Who Should Take This Class?:
Anyone interested in climate change, environmental science, and/or interactions between humans and the environment. Previous course work in environmental science is not required. This class satisfies the Environment Theme of the Liberal Education requirements.
