Communication in organizational settings. Organizational structure and dynamics and their effect upon the communication process. Individual projects.
Class Notes:
This course is for STRAT COMM graduate students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. 10 spots are reserved for undergraduates who wish to complete their senior capstone in this course. This course is taught in person with online elements.
Class Description:
Organizations run the world, yet they do not always function in ideal and understandable ways. This course is designed to help students understand the complexities of communication in the workplace, government, and other organizations, and perhaps even improve it. "Communication" here refers to both communication between members of an organization, and between the organization and the outside world.
NOTE: The section Jeremy Rose teaches is reserved for graduate students in the Strategic Communication M.A. program - no undergraduates admitted.
Grading:
Midterm exam (22% of the course grade); final exam (22% of the grade); 11 responses to readings (24%); application paper (9%); annotated bibliography (22%). In many cases, the annotated bibliography for this course becomes a major component of the literature review for the student's M.A. capstone project.
Exam Format:
Test: 10 definitions, plus two essay questions (supplied in advance)
Class Format:
Lecture / discussion. Students post reflections on the readings the night before class; a large percentage of the class period is spent discussing the students' postings.
Workload:
Roughly 30 pages per week; weekly reflection postings
