Course Catalog Description:: Close reading of selected literary or epigraphical texts of importance for the history of ancient Mediterranean religions, along with critical discussion of trends in recent scholarship. The texts may be read in the original languages (such as Greek, Latin, Hebrew, etc.) but may also be accessed in translation where appropriate.

Class Description:: This course will spend considerable time on Jewish literature produced during the Persian, Hellenistic, and early Roman periods (c. 540 BCE - 100 CE). We will primarily read texts in translation, but students competent in Greek or Hebrew will be expected to work with the texts of their respective skills. Examples of texts we will analyze are: Ezra and Nehemiah; Qohelet (Ecclesiastes); The Letter of Aristeas; excerpts from the works of Philo; The Wisdom of Solomon; Esther (the Hebrew and Greek versions); Judith; Daniel (plus Greek editions to Daniel); 3 Maccabees; 1 Enoch; Jubilees; 1 and 2 Maccabees; Psalms of Solomon; excerpts from the Dead Sea Scrolls; excerpts from Josephus; and 4 Ezra. We will also incorporate secondary research that helps to contextualize these texts, and we will address the use of particular genres (novel, historiography, wisdom, and apocalypse).
Who Should Take This Class?:: Graduate students in graduate programs in CNES, HIST, or related fields in JWST, RELS, CMS, or Pre-modern World. Non-degree students need faculty permission to register.
Class Format:: Seminar style: discussion, presentation, and final research paper.
