Course Catalog Description:: Topics specified in Class Schedule.
Class Description:: This course presents a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the cinema and media cultures of modern South Asia. It consists of readings that impart factual knowledge about the evolution of these since the late-nineteenth century till the age of digital/social media. Moreover, the course asks and encourages students to interpret and understand these developments in the context of colonialism, (sub)nationalisms, identity politics, issues of social and political justice, etc. Along with canonical scholarly writings on various aspects of these issues, we will interact with a number of primary texts. Students are required to watch, read about, and follow Bollywood and non-Bollywood films, television series, political/social campaigns, and the news media. A significant part of the potential assignments will consist of presenting original, critical responses to these primary texts interpreted through the readings assigned. To facilitate this process, the course will include a number of theoretical texts on the media, cinema, and public cultures of the modern world.
