Class Description:
"AMES3420: Performing Arts and Martial Arts, AnOther Philosophy in Japan" challenges the typical understanding of "Japanese philosophy," which usually refers to Western-influenced philosophy in modern times (1868 onward). When its precursor is mentioned, discussion tends to focus on religions (Shinto, Buddhism, and Confucianism) as its matrices. This course shifts our attention to practitioners of physical activities--mainly performing arts and martial arts--as active agents doing the philosophizing, aiming at exploring philosophical ideas conceptualized, practiced, and articulated by artists. Whether they contemplate their respective techniques or training methods, or whether they conceptualize how to acquire the technique in question themselves or how to transmit such knowledge that they thus acquired to their disciples and offspring, these practitioners would inevitably face what we usually think of as philosophical problems: "What is it to be natural?" "What is our existence?" "What is knowledge and how is it generated and transmitted?" The list goes on, encompassing such topics as "body and mind," "knowledge," "gender," "naturalness," and so on. This course explores this phenomenon chiefly using materials from premodern times (through the late nineteenth century), but the theoretical implications go well beyond the said time frame, and our thinking of these matters in this course is well applicable to us, here and now.
