Class Description:
PubH 6727, Health Leadership and Effecting Change, is designed primarily for students who aim to be leaders in healthcare organizations, especially delivery organizations such as hospitals, medical groups, long-term care facilities, and integrated delivery systems. Students learn core concepts of leadership, including principles of organizational change. They use a self-assessment instrument to understand their own current strengths and shortcomings as a leader and to plan for their professional development. The readings are books and articles from the general leadership literature, which are applied in discussion of health care settings. Small teams of students carry out projects to learn how change has been accomplished in real world health care settings. Their findings are reported orally to the class and in writing. The instructor is Gordon Mosser, MD. Dr. Mosser joined the School of Public Health faculty in 2006 after 30 years in healthcare leadership and clinical practice as a general internist. Prior to coming to the University, he founded and led a medical group, served as a medical director in a health plan, and co-founded and led the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement for 13 years. He was educated at Harvard (AB and MD), the University of Minnesota (residency in internal medicine), and Oxford (MLitt in philosophy and fellowship in epidemiology and statistics). His interests are in healthcare leadership, organizational behavior, teamwork, and quality improvement. He has published 20 articles and book chapters on these topics.
