However, when it comes to what we should do about these forms of oppression, there are vast disagreements. Is resistance justified when it is violent, or should we remain peaceful at all costs? Are racism and sexism connected, or are they fundamentally different kinds of oppression which require different responses? Is resistance meaningful if the prospects of eliminating oppression are bleak? Are race and gender inherently oppressive categories that we should eliminate completely, or should they be conserved? Does the criminal justice system help to sustain racism and/or sexism? Is our current political system compatible with the eradication of oppression, or is a radical restructuring of society necessary? In this class, we will survey a variety of influential perspectives on these issues, including works by: James Baldwin, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., Angela Davis, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Stokely Carmichael, Cornel West, bell hooks, Audre Lorde, W.E.B. Dubois, and Frederick Douglass.
