- The major literary genres developed in Spain from the Reconquest to 1502, with reference to the crucial transformations of the Middle Ages, including primitive lyric, epic, clerical narrative, storytelling, debates, collections, chronicles, "exempla," and the Celestina (1499-1502).
- Class Description:
- The major literary genres developed in Spain from the Reconquest to 1502, with reference to the crucial transformations of the Middle Ages, including primitive lyric, epic, clerical narrative, storytelling, debates, collections, chronicles, "exempla," and the Celestina (1499-1502). We will read some of the major works in Castilian from the medieval period, pausing along the way to consider some less well known texts. Along with the historical and social contexts of these works (especially those involving the fraught interactions between Christians, Muslims, Jews and converts), the course will also emphasize a variety of critical approaches that help discover meanings that go beyond historical periodization. One such interpretive model, for example, will take into account economic transactions and obligations in order to explore the ethics of interpersonal, intercultural and interfaith relations.
