- Class Description:
- SCMC/MIMS 5002 operates as an advanced film analysis seminar, which pulls together the practices of exposure, engagement, and enunciation. This capstone class involves viewing a series of films, some of which may be unfamiliar to many of the participants including MAHAGANAR, JEANNE DIELMAN, and FORCE MAJEUR, and others, such as THE SOUND OF MUSIC, which may porve all too familiar! We will work with these films in analytic terms: in the sense of "taking apart" the works and examining semiotics and cultural affect. Students will, with the help of writing from Pascal Bonitzer, Manthia Diawara, Jayne Loader and others, develop and strategize their own approaches to film analysis and deepen their cinema studies expertise. Each week will feature a lecture, short pair presentation. and clips or a screening. culminating in a midterm analysis essay and a final project in which student propose or create an object for anaylsis or their own.
