This course presents some seminal narrative texts by German authors from the 19th and early 20th century through the lens of film and comic strip adaptations. We will focus on two questions:
1) In what ways do directors and comic strip artists interpret the texts? Which aspects of the original do they highlight? Which ones do they ignore or change (and why)? Thus, the course is an introduction to adaptation studies.
2) How do elements of a story, such as point of view or the depiction of space, change when translated from a text to a medium that combines written or spokentext with images? Thus, the course is an introduction to narratology, comic studies, film studies, and inter-media studies.
Authors covered in this course include E.T.A. Hoffmann, Arthur Schnitzler, Franz Kafka, and Hans Fallada. Directors include Orson Welles and Edgar Reitz. You likely don't know any of the comic strip artists yet, but you will love them by the end of the course!
Conducted in German.
