Community/Media/Activism challenges students to think beyond the borders of a field, a subject of study, and the classroom space by engaging with local communities and learning through making. Through screenings of French and Italian films, class discussion, invited speakers, and practical assignments, this semester we will explore how documentary film-making can be deployed to favor human diversity, to fight for social and environmental justice, to expose unseen and unheard stories, and to question prejudices that have to do with race, gender, class, body shape, and cognitive abilities. While studying the role of documentary film-making in Italian and French contemporary history, we will learn how to create documentaries that are sensitive to issues of environmental justice, social diversity, and political inclusiveness.
As final assignment for Community/Media/Activism, you will work in small production units to shoot your own documentary!
