Class Description:
This course covers the time period of Hellenistic rule beginning with the conquests of Alexander the Great and ending with the rise of Roman rule over the Mediterranean (c. 336 - 30 BCE). We primarily will examine the effects of and responses to the "Hellenization" of the ancient Mediterranean landscape, and we will spend considerable time on the Ptolemaic and Seleukid empires as case studies. In particular, we will examine (1) the ways in which Greek rulers adapted their respective rulership in conversation with local cultural and religious traditions; and (2) how certain local, ancestral groups responded to Hellenistic rule. The course, then, will not only provide a historical survey of the Hellenistic period but also will provide historical background of Egyptian kingship and religious practices, ancient Near Eastern royal and religious traditions, and the history of Jewish resistance in Judea. At the same time, we will read in translation royal decrees, papyrological evidence, and narratives as well as analyze visual evidence (coins, architecture, and art) in order to articulate the interaction between Greek rule and its conquered populations.
