- Class Description:
- This workshop explores Jesuit enterprise in China, with an emphasis on scientific, artistic, and cultural exchange. We will examine the overarching Jesuit plan for their missionary work and consider how their role as conduits of European scientific and artistic knowledge supported their larger project of religious conversion. The class traces the ideas and techniques introduced by Jesuits and their collaborators into the fields of Chinese cartography, astronomy, natural history, painting, printing, and engraving from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Moreover, we will see how Chinese scholars, bureaucrats, and emperors responded to these European ideas. Students will gain an understanding of the intellectual and artistic trends in Europe and East Asia that defined this important period of intercultural discourse. At the same time, they will see how scholars in the fields of Chinese history, art history, history of science, and religion are engaging with these materials to explore Sino-European exchange in new ways.
