Class Description:
This course examines the kind of works that form the backdrop for Quentin Tarantino's 1994 film Pulp Fiction: crime fiction by authors such as Dashiell Hammett, James Cain, Raymond Chandler, and Mickey Spillane; and films often categorized as film noir, i.e., "black cinema," that distinctive film universe composed of equal parts atmospheric visuals, hardboiled dialogue, and violent action. Readings will include Hammett's Maltese Falcon, Cain's Double Indemnity, and Chandler's Murder, My Sweet, as well as excerpts from other texts. Films will include John Huston's The Maltese Falcon, Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity, and Orson Welles' Touch of Evil, as well as neo-noirs such as Roman Polanski's Chinatown, David Lynch's Blue Velvet, Curt Hanson's L.A. Confidential, and, of course, Pulp Fiction. Special consideration will be given to the global context, by considering international films such as the French Pepe Le Moko, Rififi, and Bob le Flambeur; the Italian Osessione; and the Hong Kong Hard-Boiled. Required critical texts on pulp fiction, film noir and specific texts and films will help students understand the significance of these works in relation to politics, gender representation, and other topics, as well as literary and cinematic history and historiography.
